The park is located in a transition zone between the hardwood forests of Minnesota's southeastern blufflands and its southern oak barrens; an area originally covered with prairie and scattered bur oaks. Today, most of the surrounding area is used for agriculture. The upper reaches of the Whitewater River's north branch runs through the park. The park's hardwood forest and adjacent farmland include a variety of habitats desirable to a wide variety of plants and animals.
