Five hundred million years ago, a shallow sea covered much of North America including southeastern Minnesota. On its bed, sediment accumulated which later turned into rock hundreds of feet thick. Since the sea withdrew, 400 million years ago, erosion has cut through this bedrock shaping the valleys and buffs. The blufflands of southeastern Minnesota are well represented by Whitewater State Park with its dolomite cliffs, trout streams, and hardwood forests.
